You are absolutely correct! It is also called ’straight up’. Of course if you’re betting on the favorite, your payout will be a lot lesser. If you are betting on an upset though, and it hits, you will win a great deal more than with the spread. You are basically correct there is no point spread when you bet the money line. You won’t find any organized betting were you can bet on the winner with no point spread or money line. The purpose of the spread or money line is to even out the betting so that approximately the same amount of money is bet on each team so that the house doesn’t go broke. Without the odds everyone would bet on the favorite and because the favorite wins more often than not the sportsbook would quickly go out business.
